Read Across America

We had some special events today for Read Across America.  Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss.  All of Pine Glen gathered together, students and teachers, to read together independently in the gym.  Then we had Mr. Musselman come in a read a portion of Bartholomew and the Oobleck by Dr. Seuss.  After he gave us our own oobleck to explore and asked us, "Is it a solid or a liquid?"  After playing with it we made our claims.  Most of us used our scientific knowledge to determine it was a solid.  We found out it is actually a non- Newtonian fluid.  That is, it acts like a liquid when being poured, but like a solid when a force is acting on it. You can grab it and then it will ooze out of your hands.  Everyone got to take home their own bag of oobleck.  It was a great first week back after a vacation!
