Reading Homework

Today your child will begin their nightly reading homework.  Everyone should be reading at least 20 minutes every night.  They may read independently, with someone, or listen to an audio book.  Students may choose any type of book - fiction, non-fiction, chapter book, picture book etc. as long as they are reading and what they have chosen helps to develop a love for reading.  In your child's folder they received a sheet with different response activities.  Throughout the week they should work on completing 2 of these choices.  The finished work is due on Friday.  Although they only have 2 responses to complete it is crucial that your child is reading EVERY night. Through reading they develop a wider vocabulary, can read good detailed sentences, and are able to help their own writing.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Show and Tell

Everyone loved bringing in a special item from home to show their friends.  We had trophies from sports we play, trading cards, odd finds they have made and of course favorite stuffed animals.  It was fun to see what everyone holds near and dear to them.  It showed me a little more about each one of them.  Thank you for sharing!

Hero's Assembly

We had a beautiful afternoon for our Hero's Assembly.  All 3rd graders wrote thank you letters to the Police or Fireman and these were presented at our assembly.  Two students, Adam and Vivianna, were selected to read their letters at the assembly.  They both did an amazing job.  It is a great day to stop and thank all who help to keep our community safe.

Back To School Night

Back to School Night for Grown-Ups is scheduled for this Wednesday, September 13th from 6:00 to 7:30.  The night will begin in the cafeteria at 6:00 with opening remarks from the principal.  We will leave the back doors of the cafeteria open to parents in order that they can enter and exit the building through the cafe.  At 6:15 parents are free to proceed to classrooms.  We will continue to have two informational sessions.  The first session will be held from 6:15-6:45.  The second session will run from 6:55-7:25.   Parents are welcome to attend either session.

This is a great evening when teachers and parents can discuss expectations, curriculum, classroom
procedures and establish partnerships between home and school.  We regret that we are unable to
provide child care.  We appreciate parents making arrangements for the care of their children in order to attend this important evening.

Writer's Notebook Pictures

Your child’s homework is to go on a hunt for writing ideas.  It may be things they love or really dislike, something or someone that motivates them, something that they know a lot about, or things that gets us feeling something (happiness or sadness).  Your child will need to bring in copies of photos you’ve taken,  words or pictures that they cut out from magazines, or printed from online that represent them and their interests. Some ideas may be:

  • favorite places they have visited
  • sports they play, activities they participate in or favorite teams
  • Hobbies that they enjoy
  • Pictures of books they have read
  • Favorite animals or a pet that they have
  • Important people in their life

Anything that allows your child to remember an experience and convey all the feelings that go with that story will work.   All the visuals that your child brings in will be cut up and used to decorate their Writer’s Notebook..  Please have all photos, pictures, words, etc. in by Monday, September 11.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Our First Day!

We had a great first day of school.  It was so nice to get to know everyone a little more & I am looking forward to read their answers to different questions they filled out for me.  We also read the book What If Everyone Did That? by Ellen Javernick.  In the book the little boy does something and sees it as no big deal but then is asked but what if everyone did that?  After reading it  we came up with ideas that may happen in our classroom.  For example, what if everyone just left one book out?  We talked about how we need to work together to keep the room safe, clean and organized so that we all can learn.  Mr. Lyons and Mrs. Tilton (Ms. Zanotti) introduced us to the new Buddy Bench on the playground.

Working together to illustrate our book page for What If Everybody Did That?
